I see her through the windows
Focused on her reflection
In a masked mirror
Turning her face to the side
With curious intent
Seeking herself in her skin.
Can she see her?

Can she see me?
Looking up through my lashes
Like curtains to obscure
This accidental view.
I don't turn away.

She performs a lazy twirl
To dance for her image
Hands on bare shoulders.
Delighting in herself
With such wonder.
Is this what love is?

Smoothing her hair
Tracing her lips
Dipping her face down
To see the flash of her own eyes,
Are they all she dreamed?

A hand to my cheek,
I look down, away,
Move to close my window
Between our worlds,
Layered in shame.

She looks up and out,
Across the way,
Does she see me?
Or only the dawn's possibilities,
As she leaves her window open
And turns to walk away.
