Would that not be as much
An evening entertaining
As if I were to look at you
In the eyes and smile

And if I were to write
On a blank page
Would that not be me
Completely engaged
And amused or bemused
As if I were to speak to you

And if I were to stare out
The window to the trees
Would not my quietness
Be as deep as my breath
When listening to your words

And if I were to close my eyes
Would not my thoughts
Swirl and dance with delight
As much as the laughter
We might share in unison
- serendipitous

And if I were to sleep
Would not my dreams
Surge, thrash and pull
At my dark consciousness
As much as any moment
I might spend with you.

And if I were not to wake
Would it not be as real
As all the life ebbed away
As the every day of being
Rolled up next to you.
